There’s a myth in postpartum care that only “hard” births need pelvic floor support. That if you didn’t tear, if you had a c-section, if you’re not in pain — you’re fine and don’t need pelvic floor care.

Here’s the truth: pregnancy alone changes your pelvic floor, long before labor even starts. A c-section doesn’t undo 9 months of your body adapting to carry a baby. And “no symptoms right now” doesn’t mean nothing changed.

The moms in our office that come early no matter if they have symptoms or not, are the ones that recover the best and heal the most.

No matter the kind of birth you have, you deserve pelvic floor care to help you recover and heal your whole body. You don’t need to be struggling to be worth caring for.

♈️ Every postpartum recovery is different, because the pregnancy and birth is different. You can’t compare or expect that the recovery will look the same as the previous. Your body carries the baby differently and what happens to the body during birth is different. Also, having a vaginal delivery or a c-section delivery changes things.

♈️ Recovery timelines are often much longer than anyone tells you. Your doctor signs off on you at 6-8 weeks, but that doesn’t mean your body is put back together. Remember that you carried this baby for 9 months, it will take awhile to heal and regain strength. And that’s okay. Expect more like 18-24 months for full recovery.

♈️ Kegels are not the answer and can actually make things worse. After birth, many people think that they have been “stretched out” and now are weak and therefore, need to do more kegels. But actually, the pelvic floor muscles tend to tighten up and so kegels can actually cause more damage to already tightened muscles. Breath work and relaxation are the first steps.

♈️ Symptoms like leaking and heaviness are common, but NOT normal. This isn’t just a hallmark sign and a badge of honor after having a baby. This is a real problem that has real solutions. And choosing to “wait and see” is not the best solution as many times it can actually get worse if left untreated.

♈️ Doing pelvic floor therapy during pregnancy actually improves the birth and postpartum recovery. Your body already knows what to do to control and coordinate the pelvic floor with your core and breath, getting you one step ahead of your recovery game. Most women in our office report that their births and initial postpartum recovery days are night and day from their births where they didn’t do pelvic floor therapy during their pregnancies.

Don’t confuse vaginismus or painful sex with low libido.

These are two very different things.

Vaginismus is a physical, muscular response, not a reflection of desire or attraction.

Many people with Vaginismus lack the desire to have intimacy because pain is present and repeatedly causing pain creates more trauma and continues the pain cycle.

There are many causes:
*physical causes. Childbirth or surgery, low back or hip pain, hormonal changes, etc.

*nervous system overload. Feelings of anxiety, high strung, relationship or work stress, etc overwhelms the nervous system, leading to involuntary muscle tightening.

Why does heaviness in my v@gina feel worse some days compared to others?

1. Fatigue—pelvic floor muscles are weak, uncoordinated, or can’t carry the load of the daily movement

2. Lack of pressure management—clenching or gripping of the abdominals

3. Constipation—pressure from the bowel sitting in the rectum which is in the pelvic cavity

4. Heavy lifting—holding your breath or lifting too much load for where your pelvis is at in the moment

5. Hormone fluctuations—changes the way our tissues feel and if menstruating, there is a lot more congestion in the pelvis
